odrive just announced a new feature that allows you to back up any folder on your computer to any storage. For those of you not familiar with odrive, it’s a universal sync app that lets you link your cloud storage accounts and get unified access, sync, sharing, encryption, and now backup for your storage.

Back up the files on your computer to any of our 20+ supported storage sources

To set it up, just follow the steps below.

Sign Up for Free

First, sign up for a free user on odrive. You will automatically get a free (no credit card required) 7-day trial of premium features, including backup.

Even after the trial expires, the free version offers plenty of value, allowing you to link unlimited storage accounts — even if you have multiple accounts with the same storage — and use sync and sharing with them.

Disclaimer: while I do work at odrive, I also personally use it so that I only need to have one sync client installed to get access to all of my work files as well as my photos and other personal files and records. It’s nice to have it all in one place, even things that aren’t traditional “storage” such as my stuff on Facebook and Slack.

Install the universal sync app

Links to our installers are available through our web application once you sign up, but you can also find them in our online usage guide documentation. Once you have the desktop app installed, you’re ready to go if the storage you want to use to hold your backups was linked at sign-up. If you want to use another storage account, you can link that one, too.

The backup feature even allows you to back up the same folder on your computer to different folders in the cloud (even on different remote storage providers). I find this to be useful for very important folders with data I can’t afford to lose.

Choose the source folder to back up

Now, browse to the folder on your computer that you want to back up in Finder or Windows Explorer and right-click on it. Select the backup to odrive option.

Right-click on the folder you want to back up

Choose your backup destination folder from any linked storage

Now a web browser will come up where you can navigate to any folder in your linked storage.

A web dialog will let you pick any folder on any linked cloud storage account to hold your backup files

Confirm your settings and let backup run

A summary dialog will be displayed to make sure the paths you selected are correct. Once you confirm, the first backup run will be kicked off for your new backup job.

Confirm your settings (Windows 10 sync app shown above)

Monitor status through your tray menu app

You can check out the backup job run progress through the odrive tray menu. All of your backup jobs will be listed. If you need more detailed information, you can open the backup activity log.

Manage your backup jobs and see the backup run progress through the odrive tray menu

Congratulations, that’s it!

Once your backup job completes, your files are now protected. Now you can relax and worry about something else.

Other useful information

Before you go, here are some other things about backup that you may find useful:

  1. You can kick off backup runs on demand whenever you want to from the tray menu.
  2. You can change the time interval between backups.
  3. Deleting a file locally on your computer will not cause the backup version of the file on remote storage to be removed. Backup is delete-proof.
  4. File versions are automatically retained. When backup runs and a file update is detected, the new version will be saved in your remote backup folder with a timestamp.
  5. You can back up the same folder on your computer to more than one remote storage locations.

If any of this sounds interesting, please go to www.odrive.com and try it out. While you’re there, you can also try out our sync, sharing, and encryption capabilities as well.

Thanks for reading!
