Sync Wasabi storage with odrive and save 80% over Amazon S3
Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage is a fantastic deal.
Starting as low as $5.99 per month for 1 TB of storage, with no additional charges for data egress or API requests, they claim to be only 1/5th the cost of Amazon S3 storage. These costs even approach S3 Glacier storage pricing at $4 per TB monthly, without Glacier’s retrieval fees or waiting times. At these prices, I’m willing to call storage tiering dead unless you have truly insane amounts of data to archive.
Sure, Wasabi may not have everything. There are currently only 4 data center locations (three in the US and one in the EU). But you may not need more than that.
Also, you’ll also need separate apps for sync or backup or anything else you’re trying to do out-of-the-box. This is where apps like odrive can help.
Use odrive (it’s free) to sync Wasabi storage through Finder or Windows Explorer like Dropbox on your Mac or Windows PC.
Your files show up as placeholder cloud files first, so they don’t take up space or eat up download bandwidth yet. Double-clicking on a placeholder file will download the file first and then open it as normal.
If you have a lot of data (the files in your cloud storage consume more space than your laptop’s SSD can hold), this is the way to go. Downloading everything will kill your system, and configuring selective sync folders is a hassle.
You can later upgrade your odrive account if you want to get zero-knowledge encryption, the ability to configure specific sync folder locations, or to be able to unsync your files (return them to placeholder cloud files).
Finally, if you have lots of cloud storage accounts, feel free to ditch all of the associated sync clients and just use odrive. It’s a handy universal sync client that gives you sync to everything from one place.
